3/5
Salt is a competent action-thriller which confirms the fact that Angelina Jolie is the best female action star around. She fits the role of Evelyn Salt perfectly, portraying the right amount of anger, passion and sadness which really makes the character come to life.
Evelyn Salt works for the CIA and is on of their best agents. After being captured by North Koreans over a year ago, she has settled down by taking fewer jobs in the field and getting married. One day a Russian defector walks into the CIA’s cover office and wants to talk. Salt begins the interrogation and finds out that a Russian spy is going to assassinate the Russian president. The defector then mentions that the name of the agent is…Evelyn Salt.
What happens next is a series of car chases and gun fights in which Salt tries to clear her name. However, as the movie progresses the audience becomes surer she might be a Russian spy, and then she seems to be American, and then a spy again. The film does this in a great way, and we have to decide for ourselves whether she is innocent or not. By the end it all becomes clear.
Angelina Jolie is fabulous in this movie, it won’t be a role she gets an Oscar nomination for, but it will be a role she is remembered for playing. Jolie is the main reason women have become action stars. Her roles in Tomb Raider, Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Wanted were all good, but this is her movie. She dominates the scenes she is in and she manages to convince us that she is badass, even if she’s sporting a pixie cut, or a skirt.
The fact that we don’t know quite how the movie will end is what makes this such a great thriller. I couldn’t leave the theater for a minute as I was afraid I might miss something. The movie really keeps you on the edge of your seat until the credits role. By the way- when the credits do role- you’ll be shocked at the ending.
