2/5
Whenever I see a bad movie I am disappointed in the makers of the movie. Killers was one of these movies. It had almost no storyline. The acting wasn’t too bad but the movie just wasn’t put together well.
I have less criticism towards the individual actors as I do towards the casting director. I don’t see who believed Ashton Kutcher could ever be a CIA agent, even in a Katherine Heigl rom-com. At least Aston Kutcher tries, not hard, but he does try a little bit. This is also one of Katherine Heigl’s worst movies in a while. Over the last few years she’s been building up her rep with films like Knocked Up, The Ugly Truth and of course that part on Grey’s Anatomy. She’s the kind of actress women love to watch, but not many people will enjoy her in this film. She does have a prolonged scream in one scene which is funny if you’ve never seen a good comedy before.
Heigl plays Jen Kornfeldt, a woman who has lived her life in relative safety and security, sheltered by her father (Tom Selleck). On vacation in France she meets Spencer (Ashton Kutcher), he is her dream man. He is dangerous, charming and attractive. What she doesn’t know is that he is actually a spy who was sent to Nice on a mission.
Skip ahead two years and somehow they’re married and living in the suburbs of some American city. They have stereotypical neighbors and are living a ‘normal’ life when suddenly Spencer’s boss calls him and informs him he is in trouble. He is forced to bring Jen into his life of danger and they have to survive from the people who have been contracted to kill him, which ends up being a lot of people.
The storyline is horrible, of course most of the target audience wouldn’t notice this amongst the mess of images on screen. The action is unconvincing and dry, the comedy is ill timed and kind of boring while the romance is almost non existent. The main problem with this film is that the makers must have wanted to make an action movie, and then realized they wanted it to be rated PG-13 and have typical rom-com stars in it. This results in a movie where the action feels restricted and the ‘raunchy’ jokes are actually quite boring. It’s like trying to mix Mr. and Mrs. Smith and The Ugly Truth. I don’t have a problem with action comedies, I liked Date Night and the Rush Hour movies. The problem is when filmmakers don’t specify on what type of film they want to make.
The only reason I didn’t rank this film even lower was the last 10 minutes. If the rest of the film was done the same way as the last ten minutes, it would be a pretty good movie. The problem is that waiting until the last 10 minutes is difficult.
