3/5
Simon Pegg and Nick Frost come to America in the new film from the comic genius' behind British films Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead. Paul is not as good as either of these other movies, obviously the actors have great chemistry on screen, but personally I would rather re-watch Hot Fuzz than Paul.
Pegg and Frost play two English fan boys on their dream trip in the United States. After attending Comic-Con Graeme and Clive head out on a road trip across America's extra-terrestrial highway, key stops on the way including Area 51 and Roswell, New Mexico. Not long after passing Area 51, the two guys witness a car crash just in front of their RV. Out of the wreckage climbs Paul, a small alien voiced by Seth Rogen.
Paul has escaped from the government's clutches, and secret service agents are hot on his tail (Jason Bateman, Bill Hader, Joe Lo Truglio). Graeme and Clive decide to give Paul a lift, not knowing what lies ahead. Along the way the three pick up a fourth companion in the form of an uber-religious woman named Ruth (Kristen Wiig). The rest of the movie throws this array of comedians into the environment, following a loose plot which is constructed to facilitate the laughs.
Paul is a funny movie, but it falls victim to the same things which seem to be sabotaging most comedy films. The plot is secondary, the techniques used are the same as most other comedies, even many of the actors are recycled (by that I mean how the same gang of actors are in almost every comedy today). Also, Seth Rogen doesn't voice Paul, Paul IS Seth Rogen. The little green alien is just as vile as his human counterpart, Paul even smokes weed just like Rogen's other on-screen characters.
Paul borders on being one of the best comedies of the year, but falls to the other side of the fence with the common 'riff-raff' of modern comedies. It's definitely a funny movie and many of you will enjoy it. Pegg and Frost have great chemistry and their characters are lovable, as are some of the amusing side characters. If a few things had gone differently in the making this would have been an awesome comedy.
