3/5
Director Edgar Wright knew exactly who he was making this movie for. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World won't appeal to everyone, but it is formulated perfectly for its market niche, gamers and comic lovers everywhere. Personally, I don't see myself in this category, but I did enjoy the movie.
Michael Cera (Superbad) stars as Scott Pilgrim, a slacker who's dating a high school girl, and he's bass player in a band. One day at the library he sees a girl who is in his eyes 'perfect'. He sees her again at a party and he gets up the courage to ask her out. However, to be able to date her, he has to defeat her seven evil-exes in battle. Scott fights off Ramona’s ex-boyfriends (and one ex-girlfriend) in an order which seems to make it tougher with each evil ex. Also, many on them have some sort of supernatural power. The rest of the film is full of cartoon violence and music, these often overlap, such as the music face off where CGI monsters some out of the instruments and fight with the music.
The entire film takes place in the “mysterious land of…Toronto”. For me this was great as I know the city of Toronto and I recognized some of the landmarks. Also, as nice as New York and LA are, it’s nice to have a movie set somewhere else. The director chose good locations for this film. The directors job overall was done well, he made a good solid movie.
Michael Cera is his usual self, still looking and talking like a high school kid despite the fact that he’s 22 years old. Cera seems to always be the same type of character, but he does it pretty well. Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Live Free or Die Hard) plays Ramona Flowers, Scott’s love interest. She’s good as Ramon and she brings a certain sense of character to the role. The other co-stars are good, the best being Chris Evans in his macho actor role. His character is funny, even though he’s only in one or two scenes.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a good movie. The visuals are done well, it contains laughs and it will entertain many people, though it will only make it onto the top ten favorite lists of a select of people. The acting is pretty good and the entire film is a rewarding mixture of bad ass and charming.
