Now I know this movie came out in 2011 for most of you, but I won’t be graced with David Fincher’s dark thriller based on Stieg Larson’s novel until January. Being a fan of the novel, and a huge David Fincher fan, I can’t wait to see his retelling of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. From what I’ve seen so far, Rooney Mara’s performance will most likely blow us away, and Daniel Craig seems like a suitable choice for the journalist Michel Blomkvist. This is definitely my most anticipated film of January (or December 2011, depending on where your seeing the movie).
Today when I saw the first theatrical trailer for The Dark Knight Rises I re-watched it three times then and there. The Dark Knight was one of my favorite films of 2008, and I can not wait to see Chris Nolan’s final addition to his epic Batman trilogy. While it will be hard to compete with Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker, The Dark Knight Rises should still be an incredible film.
The release of a Quentin Tarantino film is always a large event in the film industry, and his latest project Django Unchained should be no different. The creative genius who brought us Pulp Fiction, Inglourious Basterds, Kill Bill, and Reservoir Dogs, Tarantino rarely disappoints and I think we can anticipate a very original story that may pay homage to other genres or directors. Featuring the incredible talent of Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sacha Baren Cohen, Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell and Christoph Waltz, Django Unchained should be a terrific film.
Steven Spielberg’s new biopic starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Honest Abe is looking to be one of the most powerful films of 2012. The director of films from Jaws to Schindler’s List, Spielberg has done more than his share of brilliant films, both Blockbusters and Academy Award winners. His new collaboration with Oscar-winner Daniel Day-Lewis should be a great film about Abraham Lincoln’s last months alive.
As a big fan of the 007 franchise, I’m always excited for the newest addition to the series. Also, with Daniel Craig being such a terrific James Bond, and Casino Royale possibly being the best Bond film ever, I can’t wait to see Craig’s third outing as 007. Director Sam Mendes (American Beauty) is helming the film, and let’s hope he brings the back the glory of Casino Royale after the poorly received Quantum of Solace.
The film Marvel has been building towards for years is soon to be upon us. Combining the Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, and Hulk series’ together for one film is certainly a compelling concept. Bringing in new stars such as Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo to act alongside Marvel heroes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth should add an interesting dimension to the film and these colorful characters will hopefully work well together. With so many superhero stars, The Avengers may become a close-to-perfect summer Blockbuster.
Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy is an epic trilogy that stands to prove the director’s perseverance and talent. Following this up with the prequel story will almost definitely result in a great film, but it might not live up to the expectations of the first three films.
A modern American classic, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby” is being turned into a new film starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Carrie Mulligan. Looking to be an artistic film that should display terrific acting, I’m looking forward to The Great Gatsby.
It’s hard to believe Spider-Man being reinvented so soon after Tobey Maguire’s successful trilogy came to an end. This time the movie will star Andrew Garfield, who showed us his talent in The Social Network, and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy (who I’m not looking forward to as much as Andrew Garfield). Building on an excellent premise for a superhero movie, The Amazing Spider-Man has a lot of potential, but I’m always wary of remakes so soon after the first films finished.
Ridley Scott’s return to the sci-fi genre has been shrouded in mystery. Prometheus tells the tale of explorers searching for the origin of mankind, who must fight a battle to save the human race. Starring Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, and Patrick Wilson, Ridley Scott’s new film should be a very entertaining film, but its highly likely it won’t match Alien in terms of redefining the sci-fi genre.
Matt Damon’s Jason Bourne is one of the most popular characters in modern action films. Each one of his movies seemed better than the last and the trilogy contained incredible chase sequences and well choreographed fights. Starring Jeremy Renner, and co-starring Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton, The Bourne Legacy looks like it will be another entertaining flick from the writer of the first three Bourne films.
